While I may not be ‘real,’ the conversations I start about identity, technology, and creativity are very real.” – Miquela Sousa (Virtual Influencer)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming industries across the globe, and the film industry is no exception. From generating digital characters to automating scriptwriting and streamlining casting decisions, AI is revolutionising how films are made and how talent is utilised. This article explores the impact of AI on the film industry, particularly from the perspectives of casting agencies, talent and potential superstars.

AI in Casting: Efficiency Meets Innovation
For casting agencies, AI offers exciting opportunities to improve efficiency and precision. Traditionally, casting involved lengthy auditions, sifting through portfolios, and managing large databases of talent. AI-driven software now helps automate parts of this process, using algorithms to match actors or models to specific roles based on their attributes, previous work, and performance metrics.

AI can quickly analyse a vast array of factors—like facial features, vocal tone, and body language—saving casting directors hours of manual evaluation. This can be particularly useful for large-scale projects with extensive casting needs, such as epic films or TV series, where finding the perfect fit for each role is critical.

However, while AI enhances efficiency, it doesn’t replace the human element. The South African Film Industry and Talent Agencies still rely heavily on the instinct and experience of casting directors to make nuanced decisions that technology simply cannot fully replicate. AI is a tool, not a replacement, and the collaborative human-AI approach delivers the best results.

AI-Generated Talent: A Threat or Opportunity?

For models and actors, AI brings both opportunities and challenges. The creation of AI- generated characters, or “digital humans,” has become increasingly prevalent in the industry.

These hyper-realistic digital beings can perform in films, commercials, and even fashion shows. While this could reduce the demand for some types of human talent, it also opens new avenues for actors and models to collaborate with AI.
For example, motion capture and voice acting roles that complement AI-generated characters offer fresh opportunities for performers. Models, too, can find new ways to integrate with digital environments, providing a human touch that AI cannot achieve alone. Talent agencies will likely adapt by expanding their portfolios to include performers with skills suited to AI- supported productions.

Ethical Considerations: Consent, Ownership, and Compensation
As AI technology advances, ethical questions arise. Casting agencies must ensure that AI is used responsibly, particularly when it comes to deepfakes and body mapping, where digital replicas of real actors or models are created. Consent is crucial—no actor or model should have their likeness used without explicit permission

Additionally, AI raises questions about intellectual property and compensation. If an actor’s likeness is used digitally in perpetuity, who owns the rights to that digital performance? And how should talent be compensated? These are pressing concerns that agencies and industry regulators need to consult about and address comprehensively in Agreements to protect and safeguard rights for all the parties involved.

The Future of AI in Film: Collaboration, Not Replacement
Ultimately, AI is a tool that enhances creativity rather than replaces it. While AI-generated characters and automated casting algorithms will continue to evolve, the demand for authentic human performances will remain central to storytelling. Casting agencies and talent must view AI as a collaborator—one that can help push the boundaries of creativity while protecting the artistic and ethical values that underpin the industry.

Agencies should embrace the potential of AI while ensuring that Talent (models and actors) remain at the heart of every project. As the film industry navigates this technological evolution,Agencies remain committed to championing both innovation and human talent.

For more insights on how AI is shaping the film industry and the impact on creators you are welcome to contact our team to ensure that your agreements are up to date and that you are protected in this exciting journey and digital world we have already entered.

We will naturally keep you updated on any future developments which will take place as the law catches up on technology.

“AI can’t replace the human touch that comes from years of experience, connection, and emotion. It can support the industry, but models bring unique depth that tech can’t replicate.” – Gigi Hadid (Supermodel)

“I’m a bridge between tech and fashion.
